The biggest controversy for the country this year in terms of sports is the cancellation of the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. The root of the matter? Pacman’s refusal to a random blood testing before the fight.
My friend Ronnie Trinidad of the defunct Hotwire show found a link I have totally forgotten, the interview of Atty. Dong Puno in 2005 with Pacman right after he lost his first fight with Erik Morales.
Ronnie pointed me to a link and watching the video from a website called Topgelato.com, I realized there is indeed a basis to the apprehension of Manny Pacquiao to a random test.
The claims go like this – in 2005 in Las Vegas, 30 days before the Pacquiao-Morales bout, the Nevada Sports Commission required Paquiao to undergo a full medical. Pacquiao complied.
Two days before the fight and a day before the weigh-in, just as Pacquiao has achieved his ideal fighting weight, the Nevada Sports Commission called him to say he needed to get a blood test at once because “THE HOSPITAL LOST ALL HIS RECORDS!”
For an ordinary human being, it would not have mattered. But Manny has been through intensive training and diet and pulling out the amount of blood needed for a blood test would weaken him, “WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!!!”
Everyone complained in Manny’s camp but to no avail because he was not yet The Manny Pacquiao of today. So our champion went inside the ring with a visible handycap that no one knew because the Manny Pacquiao we know would not bother to make any noise about this, just go on and fight.
He even saw it as an advantage because in his own words – “Hindi ngayon alam ni Morales na mas malakas pala ako sumuntok so sa susunod na laban magugulat siya.” Which has history ton say the result.
Now why does Manny not announce this as his reason? Because there is no need to. Under the law it is not a requirement. He may or may not agree to the demand of Mayweather and he will not be less of a fighter or a man.
It may also be because of Manny’s basic humility, he does not want to make excuses for his fight. Knowing Manny as we know him, he just wants to fight and see how he does. From his previous fights, we will see that even after losing, he has no excuses.
Manny already agreed to a blood test 14 days before the fight. Mayweather refuses this. Why? Maybe for the very reasons we cited above. Maybe Mayweather knows t6hat he cannot beat Pacquiao in a fair fight so he goes out and takes a few points for himself.
But this is Vegas, and maybe there is another player in all this that wants to cash in on a Pacquiao loss. Remember that this is a Pacquiao fight and Manny losing will mean a big win for Mayweather bettors. Finally, remember this is Vegas and gambling to win has been their game eversince.
